SAND GINGER - KAEMPFERIA GALANGA

Sand ginger (scientific name Kaempferia galanga) is a monocotyledonous herb belonging to the ginger family. It is commonly believed that sand ginger has its origin in the Asian nations China and India, but currently this plant is extensively cultivated in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia. The rhizome of this herb is extremely aromatic and people in Vietnam hold it in very high esteem, especially as a spice. As a spice, this herb is used to add flavour to rice. Moreover, it is also used in the traditional herbal medicine of several Asian countries. In many countries, this spice is quite popular and people there often use it in soups and curries.

Common uses

While the sand ginger's rhizome is the spice component of the plant, the leaves are consumed as well; they are eaten raw or cooked as vegetables. In Thailand, the rhizome is an ingredient in curries. It is typically grated or crushed like ginger. It is used in Malaysian nasi kerabu, which a dish featuring blue rice. Szechuan cuisine uses the dried form of the spice. In Indonesia, sand ginger is used to make a beverage called beras kencur. This drink is a staple of the traditional Indonesian medicine called jamu. Beras kencur is similar to Mexican horchata and consists of cinnamon, rice, and sand ginger.
